Here are some ‘little gems’ of useful information that I use on a regular basis for many of my websites. I hope you will find some of them helpful, I will continue to add to the list as I discover more them.

Stopping adverts in YouTube videos

Adverts for other videos show at the end of embedded YouTube videos on webpages, to stop them showing simply add this code to the video link: ?rel=0&controls=1&autohide=1&showinfo=0

Removing the ‘bubble’ on Google maps

Sometimes I just want a little map without the rather large pop up, find a simple tutorial on how to do this here:

Create favicons for all your websites

Favicon creator application can be found here:

Website date

Here is a simple bit of code I insert in to many of my websites to keep the correct year:

<script type=”text/javascript”>
var date_object = new Date();
var year = date_object.getYear();
if(year < 2000) { year = year + 1900; }

Adding a HR to WordPress WYSIWYG

Horizontal rules can be helpful in making a page aesthetically pleasing, rather than manually inserting the code, you can add a simple piece of code to the functions file of a WordPress site and the icon will be added to the WYSIWYG. The code is as follows:

function enable_more_buttons($buttons) {
$buttons[] = ‘hr’;
return $buttons;
add_filter(“mce_buttons”, “enable_more_buttons”);

Changing the colour of selected text:

We all love to copy and paste off the web, do you ever notice how some websites have a funky colour for their selected text? I did! Here is the simple CSS to style your text with the colour of your choice:

background:#C1EEFB ;

I will continue to add little bits and pieces as I find and use them, hope they help you.
